Sugar cane cultivation is the backbone of the Brazilian economy. A customer of John Deere, a giant in the harvester manufacturing industry, had a problem with a sugarcane harvester filter and turned to FILTER-MAX for a solution.
Brazil is the world’s leading producer of sugarcane, with 9 million hectares under cultivation and an annual production of more than 700 million tonnes, accounting for more than 40% of global production. Sugarcane cultivation contributes more to the Brazilian economy than the GDP of many countries, and more than one million Brazilians are employed in the industry.
Sugar cane cultivation in Brazil dates back to the middle of the 16th century and has traditionally been harvested by hand. Today, 95 per cent of the sugarcane is harvested by machinery. Mechanisation has not only improved working conditions, but also productivity.
Engineer Anderson Moreno says: “The hydraulic filters on this John Deere harvester did not have the level of durability required by John Deere’s customers . Problems were occurring in the field and uptime was too short. So we turned to FILTER-MAX and started looking at ways to improve the design for a second round of testing.”
PETER, Applications Engineer at FILTER-MAX, explains that his regular visits to the customer’s farm and interactions with the John Deere personnel naturally led to a collaborative relationship. PETER and their team worked collaboratively to identify the problem and develop a suitable filter solution.
In Brazil, the sugar cane harvest season lasts from the end of March to the beginning of December. It is not possible for farm customers to wait until the next harvest to test the filters on their sugarcane harvesters. The validation work has to be carried out in advance, and this can only be achieved by accelerated bench testing. As a result, the testing time had to be compressed into a shorter period.
In order to solve the problem of unsatisfactory equipment performance during the validation phase of the field test, the customer wanted FILTER-MAX’s assistance in redesigning the hydraulic filters of the John Deere sugarcane harvesters. The latest filter design is shown on our website www.filter-max.com.
FILTER-MAX provided support. The new design solution features a sealed configuration with new filters to keep out contaminants. These design changes improve stiffness and sealing performance, which extends the life of the filter.
In laboratory tests, the unit was subjected to harsher than normal operating conditions, particularly heavy pollution. The results obtained from the actual tests were encouraging and the virtual tests also yielded favourable results.
The successful relationship with John Deere’s Brazilian distributor has further enhanced FILTER-MAX’s reputation in Brazilian agricultural applications, arguably the country’s most dynamic sector. Cristoforetti said, “This is an example of how we are assisting in the development of the Brazilian agricultural market, which has a promising future from an economic point of view.”
Bruce, Product Engineering Manager for John’s Sugarcane Harvester product line, emphasised that the partnership between the two companies will not only benefit their respective businesses, but will also be able to create value for John Deere’s customers.
